Why the TriPac Envidia

  • Quiet, with no diesel engine

With no diesel engine, it runs clean and is significantly quieter than engine-based APU systems.

  • Saves fuel, cuts maintenance

By reducing how much the tractor engine runs, it saves fuel and cuts maintenance costs.

  • Designed for anti-idle rules

It is designed to meet nationwide anti-idle and zero-emission regulations, including CARB requirements.

  • Purpose-built NXT batteries

Engineered for the Envidia, NXT batteries use dry cell technology for greater efficiency, longer life and a lower life cycle cost.

  • Charges as you drive

Batteries charge as soon as the truck engine starts, and the optional shore power converter charges truck and Envidia batteries at once.

  • A simple three-knob controller

Drivers choose the mode, set the cab temperature and fan speed, and read the charge left in the batteries.

Overview

  • 8,000BTU/hrAir conditioning capacity
  • 270ampMinimum tractor alternator
  • 13,600BTU/hrHeat with the optional high-output heater
  • 4–8hoursExpected battery charging time

The 2nd generation TriPac Envidia is Thermo King's all-electric, battery-based APU. Its NXT batteries run an 8,000 BTU/hr air conditioner, and it needs a tractor alternator of at least 270 amps.

No engine to idle.

What Thermo King built into the 2nd generation TriPac Envidia, and what it takes to run one.

Clean and quiet.

Thermo King designed the TriPac Envidia to meet nationwide anti-idle and zero-emission regulations, including CARB requirements. By reducing how much the tractor engine runs, it saves fuel and cuts maintenance costs.

  • Quiet operation for uninterrupted rest
  • Effective heating and cooling for maximum comfort
  • The power to run the devices that make the sleeper cab feel more like home

Batteries built for it.

Thermo King's cutaway of the TriPac Envidia system on a tractor: battery box, condenser and evaporator, with shore power, air conditioning and charging lines

Thermo King engineered the NXT battery for the TriPac Envidia, to maximize performance and increase runtime. Its dry cell technology gives greater efficiency, longer life and a lower life cycle cost.

  • A minimum 270A tractor alternator is required for optimum performance and driver comfort
  • Another set of 4 NXT batteries is an option, to standardize the tractor's batteries

Charges as you drive.

The Envidia batteries start charging as soon as the truck engine starts. Expect 4 to 8 hours of total charging time, depending on depth of discharge, traffic, driving profile and alternator size. Plug into shore power when you can, and both the truck and Envidia batteries charge at once.

  • Optional shore power converter, 115 Vac to 12 Vdc, on a 115 Vac 15 amp source
  • On shore power the HVAC can run for low HVAC loads
  • ThermoLite solar panels aid battery charging and increase runtime

Three knobs.

The TriPac Envidia's three-knob controller, with callouts for the power and mode switch, cab temperature, battery power and fan speed

The Simple HMI is typically mounted in the bunk area. Drivers pick cool, fan or heat, set the cab temperature and fan speed, and read the charge left in the batteries.

  • AUTO is the default and recommended fan speed for best power management
  • Pre-cool the cab with the truck's air conditioner; don't use the Envidia for pull-down
  • Keep inverter loads low during long rest stops

Heat when you need it.

Heat is an option: a fuel-fired heater with 7,500 BTU/hr, or a high-output heater with 13,600 BTU/hr. The high-output heater uses only slightly more fuel than the standard one, and it's popular with drivers in the northern United States and Canada.

Built for the road.

  • Base unitSleeper and cab cooling plus electric power: an 8,000 BTU/hr air conditioning system and an installation kit that fits all tractors.
  • 1,000-watt inverterPure sine inverter to power appliances and electronics. Also sold as an inverter and shore power package.
  • Shore power converterCharges both the truck and TriPac Envidia batteries at the same time when plugged in.
  • ThermoLite solar panelAids battery charging and increases runtime.
  • Additional NXT batteriesAnother set of 4 NXT batteries, to standardize the tractor's batteries to high quality, long life batteries.
  • MountingDirect mount installation kit, direct mount with 1” spacer, or claw mount with 1” spacer.
  • Condenser coverBrushed stainless steel, for added corrosion protection.

Questions

About the TriPac Envidia. Anything else, call your shop.

Does the TriPac Envidia burn fuel?

Not for air conditioning: that runs on its batteries. The heaters are fuel-fired options. For savings estimates, figure 0 gallons an hour while cooling and 0.06 gallons an hour while heating; fuel use varies with ambient temperature and cab insulation.

What alternator does it need?

At least 270 amps. A minimum 270A alternator is required for optimum performance and driver comfort.

How long does it take to recharge?

Expect 4 to 8 hours of total charging time, depending on depth of discharge, traffic, driving profile and alternator size. Charging starts as soon as the truck engine starts.

Can I plug it in?

Yes, with the optional shore power converter. It needs a 115 Vac, 15 amp source, charges both the truck and Envidia batteries, and can run the HVAC for low HVAC loads.

How long will it run overnight?

There's no published runtime for the 2nd generation Envidia, but it's competitive. For the longest runtime, close the sleeper curtain and window covers, pre-cool the cab with the truck's air conditioner, leave the fan on AUTO and keep inverter loads low on long stops.

Can I run it in California?

Thermo King designed the TriPac Envidia to meet nationwide anti-idle and zero-emission regulations, including CARB requirements.

What's the warranty?

Thermo King's Limited Express Warranty, with terms available on request. Extended Warranty options let you choose the warranty period, deductible and hours of operation.

Who installs and services it?

TKSE's factory-trained technicians. APU installation and preventive maintenance are on TKSE's service menu, and all maintenance and service should be done by an authorized Thermo King dealer. See APU service.
