What is a Reefer Unit?

Reefer units, also known as transport refrigeration units, are the cooling systems that keep a refrigerated vehicle’s cargo area at a specified temperature for transporting perishable goods. They’re widely used to move food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and other perishable goods.

Sizes and types of reefer units

Reefer units come in different sizes and types, from small portable units that can be transported on a truck to large containers that can be loaded onto cargo ships. They’re designed to keep cargo in a controlled environment during transport, protecting it from temperature swings, humidity and other conditions that could compromise its quality and safety.

The refrigeration system

The system is made up of a compressor, a condenser, an evaporator and a control unit that regulates the temperature and other conditions in the cargo space.

How reefers changed shipping

Reefer units let perishable goods be shipped over long distances without losing quality or freshness. They also opened new opportunities for international trade, letting businesses expand their reach and serve new markets.

Today they’re an essential part of global trade and logistics, moving perishable goods around the world. We can help you find the right Thermo King® unit for your refrigerated loads. Visit one of our seven shops in Florida, Georgia and Mississippi.
