Leading the Charge: Electric Refrigerated Trailers in the Americas

In May 2024, Range Energy and Thermo King announced that they will jointly evaluate the integration of Range’s electric powered trailer platform with Thermo King’s trailer refrigeration units. The evaluation includes extensive testing, customer pilots and the public demonstration of an electric refrigerated trailer.

What Range builds

Range Energy describes itself as the hardware company bringing powered trailers to the commercial trucking market. Its powered trailers are built for the heavy-duty truck market and can hook up to any tow vehicle. The company was founded in 2021.

What the companies set out to do

The collaboration aligns the two companies on one electric trailer technology system: Range’s electric trailer platform integrated with Thermo King’s hybrid trailer refrigeration units (TRUs) and electric TRUs.

Where it stands

At ACT Expo in 2025, Thermo King described the 2024 integration of its TRUs with Range’s eTrailer System as successful. It said expanded efforts will include joint sales, installation and service support through Thermo King’s dealer network.

Electric units you can buy today

Thermo King's electric units on sale now include the e1000, a fully electric transport refrigeration unit for large trucks, and the TriPac Envidia, its all-electric APU.
